Dark circles

Couldn't resist =D I laughed so hard when I saw that

Christmas party was fun =) yeah read on YJ's blog haha
And yay we're going to Rangitoto tomorrow! On account of the Brain Bee spot prize that expires in two days lol

These xmas cards.. I still have eight to make and two to design... last year's self-inflicted theme was six cm squared, so that I'd be able to make them all in time, and this year I didn't give myself a theme but everyone and everything seems to be wearing a Santa hat haha cos' those things are WIN.

Question:

Yeahyeah, this is off Winnie's blog archives xD

1. Is it difficult for you to look into someone's eyes when you are talking to them?
Yes, it feels unnatural, so I have to use some of my consciousness thinking, "look at them while you're talking" lol

2. You are on a flight from Honolulu to Chicago non-stop. There is a fire in the back of the plane. You get enough time to make ONE phone call. Who would you call?
"If I have time to make a phone call I'd get the fire extinguisher." - agree

3. You have to choose between your significant other and your best friend, who do you choose?
"If they were my significant other, they'd have to be one of my best friends anyway, right?" - agree again
Actually, I don't have a significant other, and I don't have one best friend. So no choice =P

4.You are at the doctor's office and she has just informed you that you have approximately one month to live, what do you do?
(A) Do you tell anyone/everyone you are going to die?
Probably. But I wouldn't say it like, "hey, so I went to the doctor's this morning, and apparently I have one month to live"
I would tell them that I was sick with xyz. Because it might not end up being a month.

(B) What do you do with your remaining days?
If I was that sick, would I have a choice? I think I'd spend it with family/friends, and try to do the things that I wanted to do.

(C) Would you be afraid?
Possibly

5. You can have one of the following two things: trust or love?
"Love without trust isn't love" - sounds like a two-for-one deal? haha
So I'd say love

6. You are walking down the street on your way to work. There is a dog drowning in the canal on the side of the street. Your boss has told you if you're late one more time you're fired. what do you do?
D< you know, if this question was, "there is a person drowning in the canal", the instant reaction would be "save the guy". or girl. Because we consider a human life to be so much more important than an animal's... and you'd probably end up with the boss saying, "well there was a very good reason for you to be late, and that was brave of you so I'll let you off this time".
If this job was more important to me than the dog then I would yell for someone else to save it.. or save it myself if I could still get to work on time. Depends on the situation

7. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Spain, Japan, Canada xD and then everywhere else

8. Think of the last person who you really knew that died. You have the chance to give them 1 hour of life back, but you have to give one year of your life. Would you do it?
No. It wouldn't have made a diffeence. He was ready to go.

9. Are you the kind of friend that you would want to have as a friend?
Maybe

10. Does love=sex?
no

11. One of your best friends dies, what would you do?
I might be angry (depending on the circumstances) but mostly I'd be really sad. and then eventually I would try to move on

12. When was the last time you told someone HONESTLY how you felt?
Couple of days ago

13. What would be harder for you, to tell someone you love them or that you hate them?
"Of course telling someone you love them is harder. It's that fear of rejection, and if you hate a person, there's a good chance they hate you too." - agree
Although for people like my family, telling them I love them is much easier. I can't even imagine seriously telling them I hated them.
14. What do you think would be the worst thing for you to give up on?
Life

15. Excluding romantic love, when was the last time you told someone you love them?
Last night

16. If you had to go back in time and change one thing, what would it be?
It's complicated, I won't explain it here

17. Imagine. It is a dark night, you are alone, it is raining outside, you hear a noise. What do you do?
Make sure everything is locked and then look outside the window.

18. Would you give a homeless person CPR if they were dying?
yes, but I've only ever done CPR in theory, so I don't know that it would help

19. Are you old-fashioned?
yes and no?

20. Which would you choose, true love with a guarantee of a heartbreak or to never have love?
True love with a guarantee of a heartbreak. haha I read somewhere "I tell you, being in love is the best thing in the world. If you haven't found someone, you're wasting your life"
Probably over-dramatic, but it's always better to love than not love, right?

How are everybody's holidays.
We should act on all our holiday ideas haha.

The cake is a lie

^^ After using up all the riddles I knew on Winnie yesterday, I looked up some more (btw Wibbles, I looked up the answer to your six toothpicks four triangles question -facepalm- not only was that fairly obvious, I realise now that I've heard that question twice before. My mind refuses to think in 3D. aha)

Anywho
found this awesome paradox, which has been around since circa. 200 BC:
A crocodile steals a baby from its mother, and promises to return the baby if the mother correctly guesses what the crocodile will do.
The mother guesses that the crocodile will not return the baby.

which got me thinking about the "this sentence is a lie"
which reminded me about people saying "the cake is a lie"

My brother had to explain that to me.. it comes from a game called Portal, where you play as Chell, who is a test subject trying to get out of all these rooms by using her portal gun, which makes portals so she can get around without getting killed. So it's like a puzzle game in the sense that you have to figure out where to make the portal so that she ends up where she wants to go.

And apparently she is offered cake (and grief counselling?) as a reward if she manages to get through all the stages, but later in the game there are messages from past test subjects saying "the cake is a lie." Because the computer who instructs Chell has gone insane. O.o
Portal sounds really interesting. and freaky. haha

Hope everyone is having fun now that their exams are over =)
Spanish and Latin are quite fun to study compared to the sciences, I think. Feels less.. intense, somehow. lol

Busines

“Then indecision brings its own delays,
And days are lost lamenting o'er lost days.
Are you in earnest? Seize this very minute;
What you can do, or dream you can, begin it;
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.”
~Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

The problem with bookstores,
is that they are full of unknowns.
See our bookshelf at home is full of familiar faces;
just by glancing at the spines I could tell you the stories lying quietly within as well
as a multitude of random quotes,
[if you're thinking of clearing out,
it may be a while before you see food again.]
but a bookstore...
it's pretty much a house of rectangular prisms
each trying to advertise their interiors with pretty fonts and well written blurbs
all of them extroverted, none of them friendly.
Purchase is permanent.
Choose as you will.

By the way, the second 's' was left off the title on purpose. It's a riddle, like

It's music I tell you

"Poor little Maggie sat down, with all the music chased out of her soul, and the seven small demons all in again."

Yesterday afternoon was the annual keyboard concert, which all the keyboard kids in our music school + guitarists/violinists/classical people roped into performing play in every year.
I fell into the last category, so I played Debussy's Arabesque 1 like last time.. it went a bit better than before. but not much better. lol well at least mum didn't notice that I made any mistakes.
At least half the kids are <10
but
the good thing about keyboards is that all the background sequences and SFX and stuff fill in quite a lot, so all the lil' ones playing with two fingers sound cute
haha
My favourites were the 'old mcdonald jazz version' trio, cos' one of the girls had her keyboard set on some brassy instrument thingy, sounded like a duck quack
and the 'yankee doodle variations' duet. it was really energetic. reminded me of the chocobo song

The audience was a bit... lol it was entirely comprised of teachers, parents and performers
They started applauding before I finished playing, and if you've ever heard the piece, you'll know it's not one of those "hmm sounds like the end.. oh wait she's still playing" sort of pieces
And there was this girl playing violin
Audience started applauding immediately after she finished playing even though the accompianist was still playing the closing bars
I was like
...
*starts clapping for the accompianist*
xD
Anyway, it was good =]

A miniature disagreement

"Say the word and I would take you to the ends of the earth to-morrow."
"Oh, do, do! Let's go to Rome!"

***
Cheese-grater, Spatula and Tongs were best friends in Mrs Choppingboard's junior senior class. They had heaps of fun together and hung out together every lunchtime. However, Mrs Choppingboard had an unfortunate habit of making the young utensils work in pairs. Whenever this happened, one of the friends would have to pair up with another utensil.

It was now June and thus far Cheese-grater had somehow managed to pair up with either Spatula or Tongs all year without ever having to find another partner, so when Mrs Choppingboard announced the newest assignment, "Colour in the picture of Wok at the beach", Spatula and Tongs agreed to work together.

Cheese-grater was most unhappy when she heard this.
"No," she said, "You can go with me, Tongs."
"We've already decided," said Spatula, irate.
"But Tongs would rather work with me, wouldn't you?" said Cheese-grater.
"No she wouldn't."
"Yes she would."
"Tongs, who do you want to work with?" said Spatula.
Poor Tongs clinked a little under the force of their glares and muttered, "Spatula."
Spatula smiled; the matter was settled.

"OI, KETTLE," yelled Cheese-grater. "Spatula needs a partner, could you pair up with her?"
"What!" exclaimed Spatula indignantly, but Kettle beamed. She hadn't had a partner since the incident where she had accidentally sat on Plastic-Fork. Kettle lumbered over happily. She tripped over her extension cord, spilling her contents - recently boiled, 96 degrees Celsius water - onto Cheese-grater, Spatula and Tongs.

[Moral: If you're carrying hot water, don't forget to shout GUAN SOY]

True story with name changes, except for the bit about Kettle's... accidents. haha

Hello

When it comes to love, do you:

protect your heart (51%)

I came across this poll in deviantart (approx. 1400 voters, if you're curious). There should be a moral there but I can't seem to find one ><

I tried to kill the aphids on my sunflower... it's dying ): and using lemon juice and stuff doesn't seem to be working.
I repotted Afro and Silvester (yes, I name my plants, I'm that normal) .. Afro is bridal veil and Silvester is that silver-striped green and purple leafed plant, same species that *someone* put in the watering can xD because they're both from cuttings, they're growing really fast

Warning: fragile

They used to be friends, back when she still had a smile and he still had a life.

It didn't matter that his shirt was always ripped, or that there were purple shadows around his left eye.
She'd tie a little white ribbon around his wrist, and he'd feel better, even though he hated the colour
representing as it did that which did not exist

They'd go traipsing through the fields, cuttigrass and all, and by the end of the day their oh-so-pale ankles would be raw. Afterwards, her mother would give them cookies and milk.
"Why do you have cuts all over your legs?" her mother would say.
"Because scissors beats paper," she'd reply, and he'd nod but never mention that
rock beats paper too

After the funeral, she and her mother moved away. But the new location didn't help, and she still dreamed about him every night, even though time ate at her memories until she could no longer recall the sound of his voice or the colour of his eyes.
"We used to be friends," she'd say to him in her dream. His silhouette would nod.
And she'd wake up with a little white ribbon in her hand

and paper in her pocket
thank you for forever
but i think this is the end

writing exercise: we used to be friends
I'm missing someone a bit. but mainly i think the english internal we did has got to me. ahem. l0lz

that's what friends are for

Bernae's post got me thinking about philosophy lessons in year 9.. One of the things we discussed what was friendship, and what makes friendship.

According to Aristotle, there are three reasons for friendship, and these three reasons are the same as why you would like an object:
1) usefulness
2) pleasure
3) goodness

Everyone was like, are you kidding, why would you want a friend that uses you. But apparently if both people feel the same way then the friendship can work.
E.g. you can have a friend that is only your friend because you two are the only people who like watching horror movies, and so you watch them together but never talk to each other outside of that.
This kind of friendship is shallow, obviously, but then again, so is number 2 - if you're only friends with someone because it's fun to hang out with them then circumstances can easily change and then they won't be your friend.

The third type is the lasting 'true friendship' type - if two people truly like each other and wish the best for each other simply because they like them for them, then the friendship is more likely to last. Also if you have this kind then you will probably also like to be around them (2) and they can help you (1). So, it's possible to have all three with the same person.

He goes into a lot more detail than that, but yeah..
iono
1s and 2s make me feel sort of uneasy. because you never really know what the other person thinks about the situation. but they're so much more common.

Lifeprints

No two people have the same lives.

oh, you think so

Seriously though,
In that sense, a life is like a fingerprint or iris scan, and people who are closely related to you in some way (e.g. live with you) will also be more likely to have more similar lifeprints than complete strangers.

But then, you can't really say,

"She's the murderer!"
"How do you know?"
"Her lifeprint matches up. See? She arrives home on Sunday afternoons at 3.30 pm. She swirls her strawberry icecream into mush, but doesn't do it for any other flavour. And she always reads the fourth page of the newspaper."
"... what? What are you trying to prove?"
"Just listen for a minute, okay? Look at this!
She can't not press the 'try me!' button on children's toys. She's Canadian, but speaks Spanish with a Peruvian accent. She only writes in her diary with ink the colour of a robin's egg. If she could choose a new colour for her kitchen table, it would be checkered red and white, so that she'd never have to use [or wash] the tablecloth again."
"By golly, I think you may be onto something!"
"I know right? Right? It all fits! Seven characteristics - a lifeprint match!"

ahem.
'Been writing all these weird things lately O_0

Here is a message for today: rounding is dangerously amusing.

I once watched an episode of School Rumble where Tenma and friends were hanging out in the library.
Tenma had brought along an entire cake.
She said something along the lines of, "If I eat a tiiiiiny slice of cake, it will be zero calories, right?"
(next to her, an animation showing a tiny slice of cake: 0.00001 calories)
"If I keep having tiny tiny slices of cake, they'll all be zero calories each, so the total will be zero calories and I won't get fat!"
(the animation shows tiny slices of cake adding up: 2000 calories)

Tenma smiles; her logic is impeccable.

An Uncomfortable Tea Party.

Chococat and Totoro decided to have a tea party.
Totoro wore a tres chique top hat with a white bow that she'd bought with her prize money from last year's Springfield Derby.
Chococat wore nothing, as usual.

Presently Totoro poured the tea.
"What is this?" she frowned, staring at the pale leaves that had accumulated in her cup. She stuck her paw in the hot liquid and gave it a sharp spin, but the leaves only drifted feebly along the bottom.
"Jasmine tea, of course," replied Chococat. "Your mother gave it to you, remember?"

Totoro was always doing that, complaining about the tea that she herself had supplied.

"Oh yes," said Totoro, "I remember now. In fact this particular brand was imported from- is there something on my face?"
"No."
"Then why were you-"
"It's nothing," said Chococat. "You look pretty today, that's all."

Totoro smiled. Chococat tried to.

Totoro stood up. "I'm tired. I want to go home."
"You are home, honey," said Chococat. Totoro was always doing this too, ending the tea parties ten minutes after they started.
"Then I want you to go home."
"You..."
"Go."

Chococat and Totoro looked at each other, the latter oblivious, the former
decidedly
uncomfortable.

This is completely made-up, by the way.
Except for the fact that Chococat and Totoro are soft toys belonging, I think, to LadyLilith-Mirae on Deviantart.
She'd probably hate me for ruining that adorable image of the tea party by the Christmas tree that she submitted. eh.

Open day

I went to the Careers Day at Auckland Uni yesterday.
(and apparently you were there Wibble? but I didn't see you)

It was good.
We saw lots of engineering stuff since I didn't really know what engineering was
it was really interesting
I'm suspicious that that's because they tried to make it crowd-pleaser though:
The chemical engineer did lots of experiments breaking stuff by putting it in liquid nitrogen, rapid heating --> rapid cooling, etc.
Software engineer guy sort of focussed on game design/SFX, and also facebook, google and designing the health system.
Civil engineering presentation talked about "where does your poo go" and the other stuff they do, and also all these crazy constructions like the bridge in France which is 240m above the ground (Sky Tower observation deck is 192m) and the 818m high building in Dubai (apparently, they kept the height secret til the end cos' they wanted to make it the tallest building in the world.)

In contrast, the mechanical engineering lecture was a video of a guy doing a mechanical engineering lecture - stuff about how wheels, engines and washing machines etc work.
(I don't think I'm a very mechanical type person. We have this book about a mammoth testing out all of these 'caveman' inventions. It gets really detailed about fulcrums and tension in springs and things.. the only reason I read it was cos' I wanted to see the mammoth. Anyway.)

We went to the afternoon medicine lecture
O_O the theatre held 570 ppl, there were two sessions, and they still had to turn people away. Competition much.

also
I went to the "learn how to read the Korean alphabet in ten minutes"
Korean is cool. So logical.
Now I just have to learn some words =]

Fables

Recommendation! "Squids will be squids" by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith

Can't remember who I told but anyway, nobody came to be read to on Tuesday
so we just spent the lunchtime waiting and reading sophisticated picutre books. This one is awesome. It's like, nonsensical adaptations of Aesop's Fables:

***
rock, paper and scissors
***
Rock, Paper and Scissors were assigned together to do the most important science project of the year.
Rock thought up the idea.
Paper researched and drew up graphs and illustrations.
Scissors was in charge of the presentation.

The idea wasn't very good, and they didn't work very hard at it, so they only got a C. All were very displeased.

"You should have presented it better," said Rock, hitting Scissors.
"You should have done more research," said Scissors, cutting Paper.
"You should have come up with a better idea," said Paper, covering Rock.

[moral: Rock, Paper and Scissors all say, "Shoot, it wasn't my fault".]

***
Straw and Match

It was the end of the summer holidays and Straw had nothing to do, so he decided to play with the one person he had been told never to play with.

"You wanna come and play checkers with me?"
"Okay," said Match, "I'll be red, I get to move first and for every move you make I get two."

"Never mind," said Straw, "What about ping-pong?"
"Okay," said Match, "I get the good bat, you stand over there, I get to serve first and you have to close one eye."

"Ummm.." said Straw, "Why don't we just watch some tv?"
"Okay," said Match, "I get the couch, you sit on the floor, I get the remote and we have to watch my favourite video."

"You know what?" said Straw. "I think I hear my mum calling."

[moral: Don't play with matches.]

Termite, Ant and Echidna
***
Termite and Ant had been best friends since they were little. They always played together and ate lunch together. Until the day that Echidna moved into the neighbourhood.

"Hi," said Echidna, "my name's Echidna. I'm from Australia."
"How exotic," said Ant.

"My family name is Tachyglossidae," said Echidna.
"Let's be best friends," said Ant.

And so Ant played with Echidna all morning and completely ignored Termite. When the time came for lunch, Ant took out his ham and cheese sandwich. Echidna slurped up a long stream of ants.

[moral: If you're going to ditch your best friend for a new one, you should know that Echidna is another name for Spiny Anteater.]

iono if you find that funny.
it's not word for word.
I find it funny though.

Calc test today was insane..
At the end, I had 6 minutes to do 3 pages..
and one of the questions was, "blah blah blah.... find d"
so I worked out that d = 1.68 cm (3sf)
and the next part of the question was sth like, "we have decided to assign d the value of 1.5cm..."

O_o
EXCUSE ME.
WHAT ABOUT ALL OF THAT WORK I JUST DID FOR YOU.

anyway,
didn't finish
another merit coming my way >.>

Photo Opportunity~

Grammar ball today
and my mum, dad and I went along with my brother to the pre-ball that he was invited to, cos' we were all really curious XD there were only a couple of other parents there.

Anyhow, it was basically people taking heaps of photos with each other in front of this screen showing a beach. The music was like, upbeat love songs, and there was heaps of food there - curry puffs and sushi and chips and fruit and sausages and this giant bowl of stuff which my mum and I thought looked like cream. They had it all set out in the garage, but nobody was eating any of it, so as we left mum and I took a sushi lol
it was eeeeeel
i like eel :)

It was sort of weird though, being out-classed by every single girl in the room XD

And after that, we went out to dinner with our neighbours/godparents and family because my grandparents arrived from Malaysia today, and our neighbour was telling us about how pro the pre-ball that *her* son had been invited to - the host's house was real posh and they were going to the ball in taxis and it only costed $5, as opposed to the $25 that the partybus + food costed my bro.. and all the parents had been given pretty invitations and were videoing their kids etc etc
The host was European.
Mum was like: ...
should'a gone to a white person's pre-ball

ORLY?

I discovered today:

that the middle of an orchid, which I always thought looked like teeth, is actually the pistil and stamens. GET READY TO BE DISSECTED YOU UNNATURAL GREEN FLOWER THAT BLOOMS IN WINTER

that the people at Star Cafe gesture towards a table of four when we walk in

that a bruise and a cut in the same place hurts more than the sum of a bruise and a cut in different places

that it's possible to run but not break a sweat when it's cold outside

that I'm more easily offended by what a person implies than by what they actually say

that writing letters is less of a hassle than I remembered it to be

that different postboxes have different mail collection times and days

and that my parents are right in saying that no matter how bright the day, in winter a ray of sunshine will never
fall
through
our
windows.

I got a new bed yesterday. It's pretty.

Puzzle special

"I often hold your hand,
but I have no hand with which to hold.
I often sleep in summer,
but I'll do my best when it gets cold.
I often lose my mate,
but I feel no sorrow, truth be told."
~Null scanlators (who probz stole it off somewhere else)

I went to the optometrist today.
And apparently, my eyesight has not gotten too much worse.
So that's okay.
But she saw something on my retina that was suspicious.
So she put in eyedrops that dilated my pupils so that she could see better.
And it was still suspicious.
She got a second opinion.
That lady agreed that there might be something wrong with it, and that the problem could range from nothing to a tear in the retina.

Went to retina specialist.
Specialist told me that it was a unusual but natural discolouration that was nothing to worry about but he wanted to be sure so I had to wait for a second opinion.
-Half an hour later-
That lady agreed that there was nothing wrong.

O.o that used up a few hours.

Unhappiness

I has caught the unhappiness bug... This week's been a mixture of good and bad, with the result that I only focus on the bad:

Bad:
- Metaphorically failed both calc and latin for the first time ever
- Got too nervous in the music school concert that my piano teacher runs every year to do Debussy justice, and parents think it's cos I didn't practise enough
- Dying in swimming relays 'cos I haven't been exercising lately
- Tired headaches
- General sense of bleakness
- Et cetera

Good:
- Holidays
- Hair cut back to how it was before I grew it out (cbs taking photo, you can see on Tuesday)
- Report so good its like the week-old urine of red headed little boys
- I have things to look forward to
- Mum got me a polarfleece-y bathrobe
- Et cetera

You know, apparently humans find losses twice as painful as gains make them happy.
E.g. Some Americans did a study:
You pay me $100.
I flip a coin.
If it lands on tails, you win $X.
How much would you like X to be for you to take the deal?

The average amount is $200 - that is, the potential gain has to be twice as big as the loss before people will be happy.
*sigh*

Heart of a casserole

"I put my heart into every casserole!"
"I wish you'd put the beef into it instead."

Not bad for one of those maths code puzzles, eh (^_^) Or maybe that's just me lol

Heh, I had a dream last night that it was Sunday afternoon (i.e. now) and I completely forgot that we had a band workshop.

And somehow I got myself involved in some sort of mafia-without-the-guns chase to find this thing which looked remarkably like a piece of string.
So I was vaulting around multi-story carparks and all that jazz, and I won :)

But by the time that was over, I was two hours late to band workshop. I was like, teacher's gonna kill me..
But when I got to school, it turned out that I had to do a cross-country run
And by the time that was over, it was too late to go to band.

hahaha

On a not so funny note, speeches. debate. calc test. D:
Suffer in silence.
Just like tramp.
XD

CRASH

Part of last night's dream:

It was one of those dreams where you dream that you wake up from a dream. I supposedly woke up and saw that it was 2.03 a.m. Then I realised that the reason why I had woken up was cos' there were these horrible screeching and crashing noises coming from outside my window, repeating over and over again.

I looked outside and somehow there was a 12 car nose-to-tail pile up, and then I suddenly saw in my mind the driver of the second car just before she died from crashing into the first car.

So then I went to my parents'/brother's room but they were all asleep, and I woke them up and told them. We looked outside...

and all the cars had disappeared.

Opposites

First off:
What is the opposite of fear?
What is the opposite of peace?

I remembered something I read a while back. It was a book of phobias (pleasant reading yeah) and the last short story was about a boy who went from being afraid of nothing to being panophobic.

This guy got offered a full scholarship and free boarding at a private school, and after spending a day there, he realised that everybody else in the school has a phobia which prevents them from mixing with normal kids. For example, one girl is terrified of metal cutlery and another has a phobia of bugs.

Also, every time one of the kids touch him, he gets their phobia and they are cured (but he doesn't find that out until the end).

Irritated and unsympathetic, the guy goes to the headmistress because he wants to leave the school. The headmistress agrees, but only if and when he answers the question, "What is the opposite of fear?"
Obviously, the boy says, it's courage.
But the headmistress says something along the lines of, "No, courage is merely something you can feel in the absence of fear" and then takes out a box. She opens the box and there is a beetle in it.

The guy had already been touched by the bug-o-phobic and so he had become a bug-o-phobic. So he was terrified and almost fainting until the headmistress squished the beetle, at which point he felt an overwhelming sense of calm, relief and serenity.

"Now, what is the opposite of fear?"
"Peace. The opposite of fear is peace."

(The headmistress then tells him that he is the chosen one and his parents signed over their guardian rights to the school so he can't leave.)

What do you think? I always thought that if something is there in the absence of something else then they are opposites, e.g. darkness in absence of light.

Laaaaate

Ehh.. I'm sorry for ditching everyone.. it was because I forgot that Angels and Demons is 5 years longer than Wolverine, and I worked out yesterday that if we watched Wolverine, I would have plenty of time to walk to abacus, so it didn't occur to me that I would be late until about an hour and a half into the movie. Ahem. Running in street shoes = ankle massacre.

What happened at the end? I watched up until the white smoke came out of the chimney thing.

Oh yeah, and Bernie says to visit her when you go out into town. Lunch is at 1, she said.

Free entertainment

SALE: KITCHEN UTENSILS!!! EVERYTHING MUST GO!
**Note: excludes all glassware, ceramics, plastics, silicon, cutlery, cleaning utensils, knifes, knife sharpeners, blenders, whisks, scissors, cheese graters, peelers, chopping boards, drying racks and baking trays. That's right, we're having a spatula sale.

My parents got my brother and I heaters last weekend, and I just noticed the slogan on one of the boxes:
"What would YOU like the weather to be?"

Well, I don't know about you, but I feel like a storm. Lots of lightning and hail. Can I have a storm? Why not?

The heater is too ambitious. It was only $19.99 from the Warehouse. But it's also small in a cute sort of way, so it makes up for itself.

Anyway.
This is me attempting to entertain myself, since I have lots of things to do and no-one to talk to. I just finished vacuuming the floor for the third day in a row. Cleaning clean things. I remember in a book called the Faraway Tree stories, there was a Dame Washerwoman who cleaned everything she could. When the kids' mum got sick, they asked her to do all the washing. When a lion came down from the top of the tree, she washed it. When she had nothing left to clean, she started washing the leaves. Clearly she is one of the 14% of us who have OCD.

Time to pick up some leaves~

Ze worm and other things

Since I'm not in the best of moods today, I think it's best not to reflect that and rant all over the squash court.

You know, I typed in 'cut a worm in half and live' into google, and saw the answers.yahoo.com question about whether it dies or not. This is how it went:

Q: When you're turning the garden and cut a worm in half...?
does it die or become two worms?

Best answer: for some reason I can't even picture you turning a garden

Other answers:
- um when you cut it in half . both sides will continue wriggling. the head section can grow a new tail if the vital organs arent affected but the tail section will continue wriggling untill its cells die and wont grow a head

-It can either die or become 2 worms. As long as you have not severed any major organs the head will produce a new tail. And the tail will produce a new head.

-The piece with the procreation part(saddle) will live on, only if you cut him in half 'through the balls' both sides die...

-it becomes 2 pieces of bait

-Great question, I think it dies.

-two

-it dies

Here is an amusing story that happened in Latin last week. At least, Shu-hua and I found it funny.

Our teacher said, "Do you all know your perfect tense markers?'
Us: You mean, -i, -isti, -it, -imus, -istis, -erunt?
Teacher: No, I mean letters that perfect tense verbs are likely to have.

He writes on the board v, x, s and u.

Teacher: You can make a mnemonic out of that. Everyone know what a mnemonic is? It helps you remember things easily. Actually, maybe I shouldn't tell you this, it's a bit rude. Go on, try to make a mnemonic out of it.
Us: ...xSUV...uvsx... *five minutes later everyone gives up*
Teacher: Got it yet? It's a bit rude.
Us: No.

He writes "V-Sux".

Us: *mixture of ... and cracking up*
Teacher: Actually, there are lots of exceptions to this rule. In fact, there are so many exceptions, you can just forget about it. Yes. Just forget I said that.
Us: *mixture of ... and cracking up*

-End-

The happiness debate

And once again, I wrote this about five million years ago but forgot to post it.

"I think...I think happiness is settling for whatever life gives you." <-- That's what I read.

Actually, I'd seen something like this before, on a toilet door either at mediation camp or the SPCA, but that one said, "Happiness isn't having everything you want, it's being happy with everything you have."

If this is happiness, that is, if happiness is being perfectly satisfied with your current situation, then it's possible for everyone to be happy. Right?

No.

Firstly, the more unfortunate you are, the harder it is to be happy with your situation. Of course, what people think is unfortunate is different, but generally you would agree for example that if a close friend of yours died you would find it much harder to be happy.

Anyway, the story then goes on to have one of the main character's best friends die and he says to her before he passes away (a few weeks before, not a deathbed thing) that he's not concerned about the big issues like world peace and global warming anymore. The thing that he's most concerned about is that everyone is throwing away their happiness. People have all these opportunities, and they refuse to take them, out of fear or whatever.

"Accept what people give. Drink their milkshakes. Take their love."

He was telling her this because she was in love with this guy who wanted to marry her, but she had gotten divorced before (as well as a ton of other bad stuff) and was too afraid that it wouldn't work out.

But anyway. If we can become happier just by taking more opportunities that come our way, then while we may not be able to achieve the perfect happiness, we can be happier without even destroying other peoples' vision of happiness. ("For the love of giving, grab!" can sound almost profound from this point of view eh XD)

Of course, this isn't really enough for anyone. After all, it sounds remarkably like just watching fate do your work for you and being happy with the results. Otherwise known as being complacent. Unattainable is appealing~ And also, if everyone just settled for what they had, there would be very little ambition, so the economy would fail etc.

If we have a mixture of the two, people who settle for what they get and people trying to create their vision of happiness, the people settling for what they get will get trampled into the carpet.

So, is there another way of achieving happiness?

Indestructible

It's getting colder, eh.

I was going to say something about the happiness debate, because I just finished reading a book that touches on it, but I saw something today and changed my mind XD

So I was walking home from school today, and on the other side of the road there were three kids who were about 9 or 10 years old. One was skateboarding, one scooter-ing and the other.. didn't notice because as I watched, the scooter-ing kid fell flat on his face and sort of lay there for a while without moving.

Two things passed through my head at that moment:
1) The skate-boarding kid's laugh sounds freakishly like Juliet's (from Heavenly Creatures).
2) He's fine: *flashback*

It was during our year 8 camp, and it had been raining so much that our teachers let us off doing early morning runs. Consequently, the ground had turned into ankle deep mud.
Our group was going mountain biking that morning.

About 20 minutes into the course, we were cycling on the road. Then we had to take a downwards-sloping turn-off on the left, which was the start of a narrow dirt track. The track had a sharp right turn about five metres down the slope.

We let this guy go in front of us, and he took it too fast and smashed into a tree, because he couldn't turn in time. He fell off his bike and was just lying there, not moving, for a while.
So someone yelled for the teacher and everyone was just quietly thinking, is he okay, but we were worrying unnecessarily, because he soon stood up and got on his bike again.

As did the kid on the way home from school. 30 seconds after he'd fallen and the scene was exactly as it was before, complete with the Juliet-style laughter.

Anyway, the point is, maybe kids are a lot tougher than we give them credit for. And if that's the case, then the problem of parents coddling their children out of love (like Winnie said) is even worse than we think. We worry about them way too much. Conversely, don't we tend to not worry about parents and teachers etc.? Like Mrs L. said, people like to think that teachers shut themselves in a cupboard after hours and don't have lives outside school, but the fact is, they do, and they have problems like everybody else.

To oversimplify it, when you get older, people stop caring, because they expect you to look after yourself.
That's what growing up's all about, kids!
Ah, it's too cynical. And I'm not even in a cynical mood today.
Going to study.

Dream a little

I had a strange dream last night. Who wants to hear about it? lol.

I was sitting on a couch next to this guy around our age and his mum was opposite. We were in their house, and their house only had one room, and it was on the second storey, as in, you had to climb up stairs to reach it, but there were no rooms underneath. I knew somehow that this was the third time I'd been there, and also that this house was very close to where I lived. There wasn't much conversation going on - the guy was being really nice but his mum was pretty silent.

So then my parents turn up at the door, to pick me up, and I look outside and see it's pouring with rain, the kind of rain that was falling in the last scene of Step Up 2, and it's dark, almost pitch black, but neither of my parents are carrying an umbrella or wearing raincoats. I leave and we start walking in the rain. My mum says, "Why are you spending so much time with him? You're spending too much time with him. Do you like him or something?" and I'm just like, "No.."

The scene changes and we're walking through a mall, which is very white and well lit and all the shops are open, but the entire mall is empty, and none of the shops have names. Suddenly, the guy's mum appears about 20 m behind us, carrying something. She puts it on the ground and looks at us in an evil sort of way. My mum turns around then and notices the guy's mum, and gives her a contemptous look back. The guy's mum leaves the mall and my parents continue walking.

But I look at the bundle the guy's mum left on the ground, and I realise it's two items of clothing that I own: my maroon fleecy hoodie and a yellow shirt. So I go to pick it up, and I realise there's something else there: a green sandwich board which is much wider than it is tall. I pick that up too, and keep walking til I find my family, who are inside a clothes shop. I put the bundle of stuff on the ground and then my mum starts panicking, "What is that?! Did you knock it over?" She's talking about the sandwich board, which is now lying on the ground - one side says, "No, this is not just a piece of cardboard" the other side says, "If you let this board fall you will die."

Then this really suspenseful scary music starts playing and my parents are looking for something that will save us and I say to my brother, who is studying calmly, "I wish this music would stop!" He looks up and says, "You should concentrate on what you're doing instead of everything and everyone else for a change." He goes back to studying and I start looking for something that will save us too. My parents are looking through XXXL jeans at the back of the shop and my dad says, "Did you find anything?" and my mum says, "No, there's nothing here but jeans!"

I woke up at this point.

Supernatural-ness-ity

(Whoops lol I wrote most of this like, 2 days ago but forgot to post it.)

Firstly: what is supernatural?

- being above or beyond what is natural, that is to say, unexplainable by natural laws or phenomena
- pertaining to ghosts, goblins, deities and other unearthly beings

Am I a skeptic? No. At the very least, I think "aliens" are supernatural (they're unearthly) and I believe there are aliens somewhere. I'm the sort of person who believes in the statement "Just because there isn't a better theory, doesn't mean you have to accept this one." But, I think this theory is actually plausible. As humans, we have so much information from our five senses that we tend to rely on it, and disregard anything that cannot be seen/heard/touched/smelt/tasted.

However,
Just because it isn't raining at the moment, doesn't mean it never rained.

You have to use your own knowledge. Of course, in this example, you would have used your senses sometime before to decide it was raining, so all you need is your memory to believe that there is such a thing as rain.
Then, what about all the chemistry stuff we've been learning? You can't use your senses there, only trust that the syllabus and other people's conclusions are correct, and your own logic.
Going one step further, with supernatural stuff, there is nothing but controversial evidence, and your own logic/beliefs.
And if a god exists? Again, controversial evidence, and your own logic/beliefs.

Basically, that means that in order to believe in the supernatural, you have to have a little faith. Conversely, that would make a person who didn't believe in it faithless (at least when it comes to supernatural phenomena). Faithless? That's usually a negative word. Doubt. Skeptic. Is it a bad thing to have to see something to believe it? I definitely thought so when I was younger - after all, in books, children with their imaginations and open minds were experiencing new lands at the top of the Faraway Tree every day while their rude, skeptical cousins laughed and shredded their lace petticoats on the slide. Did these children believe in fairies because they were open minded and they found it made good sense, or because they blindly believed everything put in front of them?
Hard to say.

These days though, the thing about people who doubt that repels me is the fact that they seem so cold.. if they don't want to trust you despite you not having done anything to lose their trust, why would you bother with them? Well, do they doubt because they are close minded and think that nothing you can't sense makes sense, or because they are trying not to be apathetic?
Hard to say.

Second question: Are you afraid of ghosts and spirits and the possibility that they might exist?

Well, if I saw a ghost, or the whole doors opening and closing thing, I would be really scared, because I'm a total wuss when it comes to that sort of thing. I scare myself when I see my own reflection in the middle of the night :) and I would never say 'Candyman' three times in front of the mirror in the dark.

*sudden image of Jennifer Love Hewitt taking a photo with her special camera at night and seeing herself surrounded by ghosts*

Then again, if I saw a ghost during the day, I would be less scared. Night = 4 senses working. Day = 5 senses working. So, if a ghost during the day could prove to me that it was more or less harmless, that would be okay. I'm not afraid of the possibility that ghosts exist, just that I don't want to die yet and I don't really want another way to be killed.

And after you die... (this is going into Yujie's comment)

Why do people want to believe in an afterlife? Because their own life is so bad that they want something better. Because they can't bear the fact that there is nothing after this, that death is permanent. Because their religion dictates it.
*insert other*

I don't know that there is an afterlife. It partially seems to me that it's just an excuse for people to not have to make the most of now, because there's something more. People with a definite death deadline try to make more use of their life than those without, as a general rule. Some religious people sacrifice a lot of their own life to get into heaven. Ahh well maybe they don't see it quite like that, but still. Can they honestly say that they fulfilled everything they wanted to do in life whilst keeping in line with heaven's expectations?

You live your life by what you believe. And a belief cannot be proven. That's what makes these things supernatural.

ATTAACCCKKK

lol~
So this is what happened at the SPCA today:
One of the animal attendants wanted a volunteer to feed the kittens at the ARC. The ARC (Animal Recovery Centre) is where cats with cat flu go while they get better. They're still up for adoption, and the rooms they're in are really pretty - designed like the insides of people's houses, complete with beds and carpets and things. Each room is about the size of my bedroom.

So, the lady showed me where to get the food and the special apron I had to wear etc, and says that the number of cats in each room is indicated outside the door. As she leaves, she says to make sure that I close the door after I enter the room because even though there's a low screen, the cats can jump out.
I was like, yup.

*looks at the door*
Sign says: 23 Kittens x 1

I thought, there can't be 23 kittens.

*Slides door open*

There were 23 kittens.
And, because they were starved for both food and human attention, they ran right up and started trying to grab me.
I was like, OMGASDFPOIWEJP@#)NDVL
lol
But eventually I managed to get them all fed without stepping on them.

I went back outside and the staff member in charge of the ARC walks past, and she's like, "Did you feed my beauties?"
[Unfortunately] "Yes."
"Thank you so much!" And she leaves.

The next room said, "Kittens x 28."

*Slides door open*

These kittens were older, like maybe four months, so they immediately put their paws on the top of the screen, trying to get to me.
And as I was putting the food in their bowls, one of them sliced my glove, and I was like, "Thanks for that," and then another one jumped on my back and just sat there, which made all the people watching through the glass laugh, especially because my hands were full of food so I couldn't lift her off - I had to wait til she jumped off. How terrible. This is why I like adult cats.

Story time over :)

Just because

She had taken one mouthful of the chocolate torte, but she knew she couldn't possibly eat another.
It was delicious.

- Non-indicating impatient drivers: Specifically, I'm talking about how at that X-intersection near my house, the traffic lights go green almost at the same time as the little man allows me to cross. The drivers turning left have to wait for me to cross the road, and they sort of inch forward a bit impatiently. That's understandable, so if I see that a driver is indicating left, I walk really fast. But those drivers that don't bother to indicate, but still turn left and move forward impatiently... that's so rude. Read the road code people.
- The new Schwarzkoph (or however you spell it) rose oil-scented shampoo my mum got: I've never encountered a shampoo that worked quite this badly. Yay for anti-advertising.
- People chewing too loudly: It's not really the most pleasant sound in the world. I don't mind slurping though XD
- A whole lot of equally-sized circles arranged closely together: I don't know why, but it makes me think of disease.. ack

I think that's about it, actually (^_^) most of the things that bother me aren't the little things, like friendship issues, assumptions that lead to arguments, that kind of thing.

lol on another note:
I hear my cousin, who's about 10, is taking the piano grade 6 exam~ last time we went to Malaysia, she got bored with a song she was playing and transposed it over and over into every other key. So pro XD
