that's what friends are for

Bernae's post got me thinking about philosophy lessons in year 9.. One of the things we discussed what was friendship, and what makes friendship.

According to Aristotle, there are three reasons for friendship, and these three reasons are the same as why you would like an object:
1) usefulness
2) pleasure
3) goodness

Everyone was like, are you kidding, why would you want a friend that uses you. But apparently if both people feel the same way then the friendship can work.
E.g. you can have a friend that is only your friend because you two are the only people who like watching horror movies, and so you watch them together but never talk to each other outside of that.
This kind of friendship is shallow, obviously, but then again, so is number 2 - if you're only friends with someone because it's fun to hang out with them then circumstances can easily change and then they won't be your friend.

The third type is the lasting 'true friendship' type - if two people truly like each other and wish the best for each other simply because they like them for them, then the friendship is more likely to last. Also if you have this kind then you will probably also like to be around them (2) and they can help you (1). So, it's possible to have all three with the same person.

He goes into a lot more detail than that, but yeah..
iono
1s and 2s make me feel sort of uneasy. because you never really know what the other person thinks about the situation. but they're so much more common.

Lifeprints

No two people have the same lives.

oh, you think so

Seriously though,
In that sense, a life is like a fingerprint or iris scan, and people who are closely related to you in some way (e.g. live with you) will also be more likely to have more similar lifeprints than complete strangers.

But then, you can't really say,

"She's the murderer!"
"How do you know?"
"Her lifeprint matches up. See? She arrives home on Sunday afternoons at 3.30 pm. She swirls her strawberry icecream into mush, but doesn't do it for any other flavour. And she always reads the fourth page of the newspaper."
"... what? What are you trying to prove?"
"Just listen for a minute, okay? Look at this!
She can't not press the 'try me!' button on children's toys. She's Canadian, but speaks Spanish with a Peruvian accent. She only writes in her diary with ink the colour of a robin's egg. If she could choose a new colour for her kitchen table, it would be checkered red and white, so that she'd never have to use [or wash] the tablecloth again."
"By golly, I think you may be onto something!"
"I know right? Right? It all fits! Seven characteristics - a lifeprint match!"

ahem.
'Been writing all these weird things lately O_0

Here is a message for today: rounding is dangerously amusing.

I once watched an episode of School Rumble where Tenma and friends were hanging out in the library.
Tenma had brought along an entire cake.
She said something along the lines of, "If I eat a tiiiiiny slice of cake, it will be zero calories, right?"
(next to her, an animation showing a tiny slice of cake: 0.00001 calories)
"If I keep having tiny tiny slices of cake, they'll all be zero calories each, so the total will be zero calories and I won't get fat!"
(the animation shows tiny slices of cake adding up: 2000 calories)

Tenma smiles; her logic is impeccable.

An Uncomfortable Tea Party.

Chococat and Totoro decided to have a tea party.
Totoro wore a tres chique top hat with a white bow that she'd bought with her prize money from last year's Springfield Derby.
Chococat wore nothing, as usual.

Presently Totoro poured the tea.
"What is this?" she frowned, staring at the pale leaves that had accumulated in her cup. She stuck her paw in the hot liquid and gave it a sharp spin, but the leaves only drifted feebly along the bottom.
"Jasmine tea, of course," replied Chococat. "Your mother gave it to you, remember?"

Totoro was always doing that, complaining about the tea that she herself had supplied.

"Oh yes," said Totoro, "I remember now. In fact this particular brand was imported from- is there something on my face?"
"No."
"Then why were you-"
"It's nothing," said Chococat. "You look pretty today, that's all."

Totoro smiled. Chococat tried to.

Totoro stood up. "I'm tired. I want to go home."
"You are home, honey," said Chococat. Totoro was always doing this too, ending the tea parties ten minutes after they started.
"Then I want you to go home."
"You..."
"Go."

Chococat and Totoro looked at each other, the latter oblivious, the former
decidedly
uncomfortable.

This is completely made-up, by the way.
Except for the fact that Chococat and Totoro are soft toys belonging, I think, to LadyLilith-Mirae on Deviantart.
She'd probably hate me for ruining that adorable image of the tea party by the Christmas tree that she submitted. eh.

Open day

I went to the Careers Day at Auckland Uni yesterday.
(and apparently you were there Wibble? but I didn't see you)

It was good.
We saw lots of engineering stuff since I didn't really know what engineering was
it was really interesting
I'm suspicious that that's because they tried to make it crowd-pleaser though:
The chemical engineer did lots of experiments breaking stuff by putting it in liquid nitrogen, rapid heating --> rapid cooling, etc.
Software engineer guy sort of focussed on game design/SFX, and also facebook, google and designing the health system.
Civil engineering presentation talked about "where does your poo go" and the other stuff they do, and also all these crazy constructions like the bridge in France which is 240m above the ground (Sky Tower observation deck is 192m) and the 818m high building in Dubai (apparently, they kept the height secret til the end cos' they wanted to make it the tallest building in the world.)

In contrast, the mechanical engineering lecture was a video of a guy doing a mechanical engineering lecture - stuff about how wheels, engines and washing machines etc work.
(I don't think I'm a very mechanical type person. We have this book about a mammoth testing out all of these 'caveman' inventions. It gets really detailed about fulcrums and tension in springs and things.. the only reason I read it was cos' I wanted to see the mammoth. Anyway.)

We went to the afternoon medicine lecture
O_O the theatre held 570 ppl, there were two sessions, and they still had to turn people away. Competition much.

also
I went to the "learn how to read the Korean alphabet in ten minutes"
Korean is cool. So logical.
Now I just have to learn some words =]

Fables

Recommendation! "Squids will be squids" by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith

Can't remember who I told but anyway, nobody came to be read to on Tuesday
so we just spent the lunchtime waiting and reading sophisticated picutre books. This one is awesome. It's like, nonsensical adaptations of Aesop's Fables:

***
rock, paper and scissors
***
Rock, Paper and Scissors were assigned together to do the most important science project of the year.
Rock thought up the idea.
Paper researched and drew up graphs and illustrations.
Scissors was in charge of the presentation.

The idea wasn't very good, and they didn't work very hard at it, so they only got a C. All were very displeased.

"You should have presented it better," said Rock, hitting Scissors.
"You should have done more research," said Scissors, cutting Paper.
"You should have come up with a better idea," said Paper, covering Rock.

[moral: Rock, Paper and Scissors all say, "Shoot, it wasn't my fault".]

***
Straw and Match
***
It was the end of the summer holidays and Straw had nothing to do, so he decided to play with the one person he had been told never to play with.

"You wanna come and play checkers with me?"
"Okay," said Match, "I'll be red, I get to move first and for every move you make I get two."

"Never mind," said Straw, "What about ping-pong?"
"Okay," said Match, "I get the good bat, you stand over there, I get to serve first and you have to close one eye."

"Ummm.." said Straw, "Why don't we just watch some tv?"
"Okay," said Match, "I get the couch, you sit on the floor, I get the remote and we have to watch my favourite video."

"You know what?" said Straw. "I think I hear my mum calling."

[moral: Don't play with matches.]

***
Termite, Ant and Echidna
***
Termite and Ant had been best friends since they were little. They always played together and ate lunch together. Until the day that Echidna moved into the neighbourhood.

"Hi," said Echidna, "my name's Echidna. I'm from Australia."
"How exotic," said Ant.

"My family name is Tachyglossidae," said Echidna.
"Let's be best friends," said Ant.

And so Ant played with Echidna all morning and completely ignored Termite. When the time came for lunch, Ant took out his ham and cheese sandwich. Echidna slurped up a long stream of ants.

[moral: If you're going to ditch your best friend for a new one, you should know that Echidna is another name for Spiny Anteater.]

iono if you find that funny.
it's not word for word.
I find it funny though.

Calc test today was insane..
At the end, I had 6 minutes to do 3 pages..
and one of the questions was, "blah blah blah.... find d"
so I worked out that d = 1.68 cm (3sf)
and the next part of the question was sth like, "we have decided to assign d the value of 1.5cm..."

O_o
EXCUSE ME.
WHAT ABOUT ALL OF THAT WORK I JUST DID FOR YOU.

anyway,
didn't finish
another merit coming my way >.>

Photo Opportunity~

Grammar ball today
and my mum, dad and I went along with my brother to the pre-ball that he was invited to, cos' we were all really curious XD there were only a couple of other parents there.

Anyhow, it was basically people taking heaps of photos with each other in front of this screen showing a beach. The music was like, upbeat love songs, and there was heaps of food there - curry puffs and sushi and chips and fruit and sausages and this giant bowl of stuff which my mum and I thought looked like cream. They had it all set out in the garage, but nobody was eating any of it, so as we left mum and I took a sushi lol
it was eeeeeel
i like eel :)

It was sort of weird though, being out-classed by every single girl in the room XD

And after that, we went out to dinner with our neighbours/godparents and family because my grandparents arrived from Malaysia today, and our neighbour was telling us about how pro the pre-ball that *her* son had been invited to - the host's house was real posh and they were going to the ball in taxis and it only costed $5, as opposed to the $25 that the partybus + food costed my bro.. and all the parents had been given pretty invitations and were videoing their kids etc etc
The host was European.
Mum was like: ...
should'a gone to a white person's pre-ball

hahahaha
